Learning Vocabulary

Things change so fast, not only here online in cyber world but also in the real world. We have to keep pace by continually learning, as mentioned in my previous post, by absorbing new ideas, vocabulary and concepts in order to be able to communicate with others.

Vocabulary

This weekend I learnt something new, even at my age!

We all are exposed to and absorb a basic vocabulary in our pre-school years. From then on as we socialise we build upon that foundation and add more words that we absorb and learn without even thinking about it. Further education and learning increases our vocabulary even more as we often learn technical terms that are required by our careers or jobs.

“ An average educated person knows about 20,000 words and uses about 2,000 words in a week” Johnny Ling – 2001

Language itself evolves as its used from day to day, and if we look back to say the Elizabethan times, (about the time of Shakespeare), the average vocabulary of an adult was around 500 words although Shakespeare himself had a vocabulary of around 21,000 words. He was a well educated man.

Having grown up children is a real eye opener sometimes. This weekend I felt a if I had dropped in of the moon! When youngsters get together they speak their own language. This language was something I could not understand with ease, as they were using words and phrases I had never heard before. Colloquial english… the language of everyday with its own vocabulary, phrases, nuances interspersed with slang. Certain words having taken on new meanings as the language evolves. Today ‘gay’ does not have the same meaning it had 50+years ago. Unless you are versed in this very informal everyday speech it all can almost sound foreign.

I have a few friends who always rib me that I use ‘colonial english’ but then that was the vocabulary, language and pronunciation I was taught and brought up with. Not exactly ‘colonial english’ as I’m not a dinosaur yet, but certainly grammatically correct. Even in the short span of my life time language has evolved immensely, and just as I don’t understand Chaucer’s 14th century language, nor will future generations understand today’s spoken words so well.

Children Learning Language

Listening to the spoken word

Children start learning language from a very early age by listening to adults around, primarily their parents and siblings. They mimic what they hear, not necessarily understanding the meaning of the words they use. They also learn by the tone of voice which words create displeasure and which approval. Today they are also influenced by television, videos, radios etc which they often hear in their environment. Even at a very young age they are listening intently, absorbing like a sponge, learning. My grandson is less than 6months old but already he recognises and responds to his name, and tries to communicate with you with noises in his own fashion.

Children learn language fast as they are not inhibited like adults, they are happy to give it a go and if they make mistakes they are easily corrected. Eager to learn, eager to communicate. Encouragement goes a long to helping their linguistic development.

Children have to be educated, but they have also to be left to educate themselves. ~Abbé Dimnet, Art of Thinking, 1928

Childhood Obesity

Childhood Obesity in the US

Without going into a lot of statistics regarding Childhood Obesity in the US and elsewhere on this unfair planet where half of the people suffer from the “too much desease” and half starve and die from the “too little disease”, we know that the number of overweight and obese children has increased dramatically, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention it has tripled since 1980… and it doesn’t stop! More and more kids are at risk of becoming overweight.

Starving Kids ./. Childhood Obesity

It’s like a viscious circle: from obese child to overweight adolescent… and from there chances are big – an exact 70% according to official numbers – that this leads to an obese adult, especially if one or more parent is or has been overweight.

Interestingly, while the highest prevalence of obesity among boys is observed in Hispanics, its among African Americans for the girls.

Childhood Obesity in the US has become a huge burden for the State as obesity-related annual hospital costs for children have literally exploded and continue to do so in a steep upward spiral.

Given the fact that our children represent our continuity as a human race and our socio-economic future largely depends on their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, this Child Obesity epidemic is totally alarming and needs fast, efficient and lasting solutions.

One’s got to get to the root of the problem!

Experts on Child Obesity in the US agree that inactivity and poor eating habits contribute to obesity. The fact however is that “… while national guidelines recommend 150 minutes of physical activity each week for elementary children and 225 minutes for older children, only Illinois has a statewide requirement for daily physical education.”

Of course, this is a prime responsibility for parents, however, here’s where the State should intervene and offer wise support and assistance through official channels especially when parents simply don’t care.

So what should be looked into first and foremost?

Nutrition and Exercise!

Healthy Eating for Kids

With our hectic lifestyle and both parents working in most cases to cover the cost of living, less and less children get a freshly cooked and balanced meal each day as was just normal for me as a child and as is normal with many families I know today . . . but the fact is that for the majority today it’s all about quick and easy and instant satisfaction… and that means Fast Food.

US kids – and not only those – have become a ‘Fast Food Generation’; in the US around one-third of Children between the ages of 4 and 19 eat fast food every day.

Every day!

This means these children firstly get no healthy nutrition into their young bodies to grow properly, optimize their health and boost their immune system, it also means that each child picks up a minimum of 6 additional pounds a year – now do the simple maths.

And it’s not a matter of money either as we can sustain good health with simple, basic nutrition.

It’s a matter of upbringing, education and discipline – firstly for the parents to prepare and then insist on this important meal a day – and for the kids. If done right from the beginning, this will just be ‘the normal way’… and improved health and a healthy and age-appropriate weight will follow as the result – excluding those cases where diseases or health factors like hormonal imbalances or problems with the thyroid come into play and may cause Childhood Obesity.

Healthy Activity

So what’s Healthy Eating and how does it affect Weight Loss for Children?

The prime objective should be to get the child active – our next chapter.

For this we need to provide it with a sensible amount of fresh foods and nutrients, the quality of which never changes while the quantity depends on age, gender and activity.

Most importantly, provide it with sufficient good fluids (no cool drinks and cokes… rather fruit juices and good, pure water) and a healthy balanced diet of calories from carbohydrates (eg. cereals, bread, cereal, rice and pasta); some proteins (eg. meat, poultry, fish, dry beans), dairy products (eg. milk and yoghurt), and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and yes, it also needs fats and oils.

If the body gets what it needs to function properly regularly, it will be satisfied and not tormented by hunger pangs that then lead to getting the quick fix pie or chocolate or even worse: salty chips and a coke! That ‘mode’ just leads to ‘more’ – more calories and more weight – unstoppable and scientifically researched and proven.

Do the maths and you will find that at the end of the day the ‘fast food route’ is much more costly – not to speak of the future health cost avalanche in connection with obesity-related diseases (eg. diabetes, cardiovascular disease)

However, it needs spending time and focus for your child and its wellbeing.

In my view your child deserves exactly that!

Exercise for Obese Children

Again, it’s the parents’ responsibility to see to it that their child gets sufficient exercise – and adequate exercise – depending on the age and the stages of development of bones and muscles.

Due to faster breathing, the heart beats faster during aerobic exercise. When done regularly, this aerobic activity strengthens the heart and improves the body’s ability to deliver oxygen to all its cells. Such exercises include lots of ‘fun stuff’ like basketball, swimming, running, tennis, soccer, cycling to name just a few.

Fun should be part of it all – always!

In my view the ‘play character’ is most important when it comes to exercising – and I loved these as a child and I still do! Done from moderately to vigorously, it not only covers all essential physical movements from flexibility to reaction, strength to endurance, stretches and more… in a very natural way, but it also has a mind and character forming aspect that is so important for building self-confidence and courage for the later years when these young children are facing the ‘real’ life out there.

Childhood Obesity has become an epidemic – not only but largely due to the fact that children are less active today than when they had to go outside to play… Today’s children sit down to play far too often and too long … in front of the TV or the PC that is.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average child is watching about 3 hours of television a day. And the average kid spends 5½ hours on all screen media combined (TV, videos and DVDs, computer time outside of schoolwork, and video games).

Healthy Karate Kids ./. Child Obesity

While it may not be easy, parents should try to limit the amount of time spent in sedentary activities, especially watching TV or playing video games. Toddlers don’t belong in front of the TV at all, and children should not watch the screen for longer than 1 -2 hours of quality programs a day.

It is really important that young children are never inactive for prolonged periods of time — no more than 1 hour unless they’re sleeping. School-age children should not be inactive for periods longer than 2 hours.

Exercise for Obese Children requires the parent to engage in the activities the child undertakes – to support and to act as a positive role model.

The more Fun it is the closer the relationship – parent and child – , the easier the weight disappears and the healthier the body develops. Healthy Eating and daily physical activities will simply become a Lifestyle – and the foundation for a healthy future.

How To Make a Homemade Body Cleanse – Master Cleanse Recipe

How to make a homemade body cleanse is a question that is asked by many as the process of detoxification of the body becomes more and more popular. A body cleanse can be many things. It can in effect be something very simple such as eating plenty of fruit and drinking plenty of water, to the extreme of only drinking a special formula and abstaining from all solid foods for up to 10 days. Before we look at how to make a homemade body cleanse I must stress one point.

Before starting any diet or detox plan it is advisable to consult your doctor.

The most popular homemade body cleanse is the Lemon Cayenne Pepper Detox Drink. There is no need to purchase this formula at your local health store as you can quickly and cheaply make this at home.

Take a drinking glass and add 4oz of cold water

Add lemon juice from half of a freshly squeezed Lemon.

Add 2 tablespoons of Pure Maple Syrup.

Add a dash of Cayenne Pepper or ground ginger.

Using a spoon, stir well.

Add 4 oz of cold water then stir again.

Now you know how to make a homemade body cleanse!

Each evening you should also have a large glass of water with 1 teaspoon of salt as this helps stimulate bowl movements. If you can’t stomach the salt water drink (and many can’t) then this can be substituted with one teaspoon of senna tea replacing the salt. It is recommended you have a multi-vitamin or mega multi-vitamin each day.

The detox process is meant to be followed for between 3 – 7 days.

More than 80% of those who try the lemon body cleanes fail to last out the diet for more than 48 hours!

Weight Loss Basics -- Calories In - Calories Out
The BMR determines how many calories you burn doing absolutely nothing in an environment that is not too hot (necessitating sweating and such to cool the body down—which is work) nor too cold (calling for additional calories in an attempt to stay warm—also work).

Weight Loss Basics — Calories In – Calories Out

The Simple Truth

Pay close attention to the next sentence, for it contains the entire subject of weight loss success. Burn more calories than you consume.

End of class.

Really.

All truths are basically simple, and the Weight Loss Truth rests squarely on the First Law of Thermodynamics, long proven to hold very true indeed:

The increase in the internal energy of a system is equal to the amount of energy added by heating the system, minus the amount lost as a result of the work done by the system on its surroundings.

In plain language: You provide heat (calories) to your system (body) through food, you lose energy (calories) by work done.

If you add more heat to the system than you lose as a result of work, you increase the internal “energy” which the body stores for future use, usually as fat.

The Body

In essence, the human body is a carbon-oxygen engine that with an operating temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit runs on low combustion fuels, mainly derived from other life forms (plant and animal).

As early as 1640 René Descartes viewed the body as a machine, where the heat of the heart caused the movement of the body. And being a brilliant man, he was not so far off.

For taking a wholly unromantic view of the human body, we see that it is nothing more than a machine, composed of a very large number of cells (running into the trillions), aggregated to form a cohesive, and cooperating whole.

Basal Metabolism

This machine, as machine, needs a certain amount of fuel (food, calories) to simply turn over. We call this the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of energy expended while at rest in a neutrally temperate environment, in the post-absorptive state (meaning that the digestive system is inactive—for digestion itself is work, and takes a lot of energy— which requires about twelve hours of fasting in humans).

The BMR determines how many calories you burn doing absolutely nothing in an environment that is not too hot (necessitating sweating and such to cool the body down—which is work) nor too cold (calling for additional calories in an attempt to stay warm—also work).

Once the BMR is established, all that you have to do to maintain your weight is to feed this machine precisely as many calories as it needs, just to turn over. The moment you move about, however (such as picking up a remote), you will perform work, which according to the First Law of Thermodynamics requires energy. This energy, if not consumed has to come from somewhere, and this somewhere is the body’s “internal” food, such as fat, or if no fat about, muscle.

Weight Loss

Those of us who need to lose weight, usually carry the excess baggage around in the form of fat—energy stored by the body for a rainy day.

Fortunately, if we expend more calories through work than we consume in food, the metabolism assumes it’s raining now, and turns to the stored fat for the necessary energy.

The net result of this is that you will lose weight. There simply is no way around it, not in this universe—and according to its laws—anyway.

To lose weight you simply have to burn more calories than you consume.

Complexities

On paper, this is a very simple proposition. Off-paper, as experienced by every person who has tried to shed the extra pounds, it gets a little more complex. This, however—no matter how many complexities you pile on top of it—does not negate, or invalidate the basic principle:

To lose weight you simply have to burn more calories than you consume.

End of class.

Really.

The multiTRIM Diet

All diet plans—except for the outright fraudulent ones, and be warned: they abound—have as their goal for you to burn more calories than you consume.

Possibly the most sensible plan we have seen in recent years is the multiTRIM diet which supplies all needed nutrients to maintain health and ease hunger in a fifteen calories meal-replacement drink; making the First Law of Thermodynamics work for you.

A multiTRIM Journal

A woman recently set out to shed 143 pounds over 18 months with the help of the multiTRIM diet. This, the blog-record of her journey, can be found here.

The Importance of Acai Berry

The first reason that will make you prefer acai berry to other kinds of products giving the same benefits is that it is all natural. The acai berry is a natural occurring plant, hence it comes with no artificial additions that are meant to add flavor or for preservation. Its natural occurrence also makes it available in abundance, as it replenishes itself and cannot be easily depleted. The acai berry has also the ability to grow in different regions with almost similar characteristics as the Amazon region.

Its availability makes it affordable and ease of use in different formulations. It has also the benefit of being used as a whole, meaning the whole plant has nothing going to waste; the berries, leaves and the stems are used for food, construction, beauty and medicine. The reminder of the acai berry plant can be used for other uses such as a source of fuel. All these are cheap to acquire and requires minimal processing. If compared to other roofing materials, medications and wholesome foods, the acai berry scores higher points than most all of them.

The acai berry has no can be consumed on daily bases. This has assisted the people who use it to better their health and promote good digestion. When used as medicine, the acai berry has a record of fast acting formulation due to the various components in it that speed its absorption into the blood stream. Once absorbed into the blood stream, it enables or improves the blood flow thus quickly distributing the nutrients in the body.

Despite little clinical evidence that has been documented of the benefits of the acai berry, many renowned professionals have rallied behind it and urged many people to use it in weight loss and other uses in preference to other substances. The several tests that have been carried out on weight loss, immune system improvement, and muscle enhancement, all have showed high degrees of success. The success of acai berry can be witnessed by the many campaigns urging people to start and continue its usage in the internet, magazines, television and other forms of media. The popularity of the acai berry will continue increasing as more people are sensitized on its benefits in the future.

Due to the increased interest in the acai berry, many institutions are investing in the future of the plant by doing research, tests, development, use and even marketing. While there is still much to learn about this mysertious berry, what is known is that it is one healthy and natural fruit that is here to stay.

Acai Berry – Weight Loss

If you are like the millions of people who try to lose weight, you may have tried a number of different things to shed the pounds, from following a strict and healthy diet regime to doing strenuous exercises. Not only to get rid of the extra pounds, but to also have a healthier and more fulfilling life. But, all your efforts to lose that extra fat from your body have so far have proved to be futile and now you don’t think that there is any solution for your problem? What if you come to know a berry can help you get back in shape and that too in a natural way?

Yes you heard it right, that a berry can help in shedding those extra and unwanted punds in a safe and quick manner. The acai berry, which is found in the Amazon forests, is available in the open markets as a fruit, smoothies, juice, and supplements. Acai berry has many vital nutrients that are known to help aid in weight loss. Moreover, acai berry is a natural product and thus it does not cause any known harmful side effects.

Acai Berries are considered to be powerful colon cleansers. Over a period of time, some harmful toxins which are formed inside our body get accumulated in the colon. If these harmful toxins are not expunged from the body, they circulate with the blood and get accumulated underneath the skin cells causing severe health problems, and even obesity. The Acai berries help in removing these harmful toxins by cleaning up the colon, thereby detoxifying your body. This helps in improving the blood circulation, which increases the metabolic rate. Increased metabolic rate of the digestive system helps in quicker consumption of fat tissues and thus the extra fat is lost quickly.

Unlike other weight losing pills, which take several months to show their effect, acai berries work from the moment they enter the body of an individual. This is because they are absorbed rather quickly once digested. Also, acai berries have some powerful antioxidants, along with several vitamins and vital minerals which not only help in reducing the body weight, but also promoting good overall health.

Now that you know about the many benefits of acai berry, you are probably itching to try it. But remember, these acai Berries will not work wonders unless you adopt a healthy lifestyle with a proper diet and exercise plan. There’s do doubt the berry will help, but you have to take the basic steps in order to success. Good luck!

Healthy Eating For Kids

Even though it isn't possible to get a child to like all healthy foods, there are some ways to get your child to try and hopefully like at least a few of them.

You can be as creative as you like, as getting kids to eat healthy foods can be a little harder than you may think.

Healthy Eating

Fast food is a big part of modern life these days, making it very hard to teach a child how he or she should eat healthy. The cheapest and easiest foods are those that are normally the least healthy. If you give your child the choice between healthy food and junk food, you normally won’t like the results.

Even though it isn’t possible to get a child to like all healthy foods, there are some ways to get your child to try and hopefully like at least a few of them.

You can be as creative as you like, as getting kids to eat healthy foods can be a little harder than you may think.

- Sneak the healthy food in. Even though it would be great if your kid understood the importance of fruits and vegetables, this isn’t always possible. If you can’t get them to eat good food willingly, there are ways to sneak them in, such as making muffins out of bananas or apples, or pizza with spinach on it.

- Call fruits and vegetables by funny names. You can refer to broccoli as “trees”, making them more fun to eat. There are many different names you can call fruits and vegetables, even making up your own if you prefer. Most kids prefer to eat foods that sound fun.

- Make the foods taste better. Ranch dressing is great for broccoli, while peanut butter is a great topping for celery. There are several combinations for vegetables that can make them taste much better. You can let your child pick a topping for a vegetable, even if it’s something you wouldn’t normally like yourself.

- Dress the vegetables up. Just as much as calling them names help kids eat healthy foods, making them look funny also helps. You can do this by making funny designs on the plate, or setting them up to look like people. Although some parents don’t like their kids playing with their food, sometimes it helps to get them to eat healthier.

There are several ways to make your kids eat healthier, but to make them enjoy it also has to be fun as well.

This isn’t always an easy task, because kids normally don’t like foods that are good for them. It can however, be done with a bit of creativity. Hopefully, doing this will help your child develop a love of healthy foods for the rest of their lives.
